Black submarine off our bow,
gray frigates all in line
following guided missile cruisers
between two carriers
and an oiler
seeking to refuel
at sea
to feed the boiler
and the distant Harriers.
A convoy so fine
seeking treasures
in the deep dark Pacific
outside the lanes of traffic
where merchantmen glide.
Tall waves we ride
to get there now
not later
like on a gator freighter.
Fast and steady
always on the ready
for when the bubble goes up
for when the jig is up
and missile doors open
spilling certain death
into the azure skies
above the gray fleet
and the grayer stormy sea.
